The story begins in the Middle Ages. A Galician pilgrim on his way to Santiago de Compostela stopped in Barcelos. At the time, the town was alarmed by an unsolved crime. As a stranger to the land, the pilgrim became the prime suspect. Accused and condemned to hang, he maintained his innocence until the very last moment.

Brought before the local judge — who was about to dine on a roasted rooster —, the man made one final vow: "It is as true that I am innocent as it is certain that this rooster will crow when they hang me." The judge pushed his plate aside but paid little heed. Yet at the moment of execution, the roasted rooster stood up on the platter and crowed. The judge rushed to the square and found the gallows knot had stayed loose, saving the pilgrim's life.
